Pipe relining

Relining on the upper
North Shore

A cracked or root-damaged line repaired from the inside, so the garden that took years to look like that is not opened up to reach a defect a few centimetres long.

Above the pipe is where the money is

The defect is nearly always small: an open joint, a crack, roots that found a gap of a few millimetres.

What makes excavation expensive at this end of the region is not the digging, it is what sits on top. Established planting, mature lawn and paved areas are frequently what people have spent the most on, and they are not restored by rolling turf back over a trench.

So the arithmetic is unusual here: the pipe repair is the small number and the reinstatement is the large one, which is the reverse of how most people assume a job is priced.

Relining does the repair inside the pipe through a single access point. The ground above it is not disturbed, which removes the expensive half of the job entirely.

Local relining guide

When relining is the right call up here

The reinstatement is the expensive half

Established planting, mature lawn and paving are frequently the biggest investment on a property at this end.

None of it is restored by putting turf back, which is what an honest excavation quote has to account for.

A liner leaves the surface alone

One access point, frequently an existing one, with the work happening inside the pipe.

That removes the expensive half of the job rather than merely reducing it.

Roots enter at the joint

Not through sound pipe. A liner seals the run end to end and takes away the opening.

It does not remove the vegetation, and we will not pretend it does.

What relining cannot do

It restores the pipe. It cannot change the gradient the pipe was laid at.

Where fall has been lost, that is excavation and re-lay, and we say so rather than lining over it.

Why we quote both ways

You should be able to compare, so both figures come together for the same defect.

The excavation figure includes putting the garden back, because leaving that out would make the comparison meaningless.

What pipe relining costs up here

Quoted against footage rather than a description. These are indicative 2026 ranges, and the excavation comparison includes reinstating what the trench goes through.

01

Camera inspection and report $250 – $450

Footage handed over, with the defect marked and located.

02

Junction or short section repair $1,500 – $3,500

A defined defect repaired from inside, through existing access where possible.

03

Full run, house to boundary $4,000 – $9,000

Depending on length and access, with the garden left undisturbed.

04

Root cutting before lining $400 – $700

The line cleared so the liner cures against sound pipe.

05

Excavation comparison included

Including reinstatement, so the two figures are genuinely comparable.

How a relining job runs.

Step 01
Camera inspection of a house drain on the north shore

Camera down first

We film the run and locate the defect before anybody quotes. No footage, no quote.

Step 02
Quoting a pipe relining job on the north shore

Both prices, in writing

Relining against excavation for the same defect, with reinstatement included in the dig figure.

Step 03
Preparing a drain for relining on the upper north shore

The line prepared

Roots cut back and the run cleaned so the liner cures against sound pipe rather than over debris.

Step 04
Handing over post-relining footage on the north shore

Filmed again afterwards

The finished liner recorded end to end, footage handed over with the warranty.

Same drain blocking every year?

Clearing it again is not the answer. Footage will show whether a liner finishes it without opening the garden.

Why is relining worth considering up here?

Because at this end of the region the garden is frequently the thing people have spent the most on. Established planting, lawn and paved areas take years to look the way they do, and a trench through them is not restored by rolling turf back over it. The pipe repair is the small number; putting the surface back the way it was is the large one.

Will relining fix a drain with no fall?

No. A liner restores the pipe, it cannot change the gradient the pipe was laid at. If the footage shows a section holding water because the fall has gone, that needs excavation and re-lay, and we will tell you which you have before quoting either.

Does it deal with roots?

It removes the opening they use. Roots enter at a joint rather than through sound pipe, and a liner seals the run end to end. It does not remove the vegetation and we would not claim it does, but it takes away the way in.

How much digging is involved?

Usually one access point, and frequently one that already exists. The repair happens inside the pipe, so established planting and lawn stay where they are.

Can every line be relined?

Most can. A run that has collapsed, or separated so far there is no host pipe left to line against, needs excavation. The camera decides, which is why we film before quoting rather than after.

How long does a liner last?

A structural repair rather than a patch, designed in decades. We will not attach a figure to a drain we have not filmed, because it depends on what is left of the host pipe.

What does relining cost up here?

A camera inspection and report is $250 to $450. A junction or short section repair is $1,500 to $3,500. A full run from the house to the boundary is $4,000 to $9,000 depending on length and access. The excavation comparison comes alongside.
